We are creatures of habit. Our daily lives are far more driven by automatic behaviors and patterns that we have formed over time as habit than by well thought out and/or intentional choices. This is why change is so hard to implement in our lives—we default to the pattern of the habits we have established even when we want to make new choices. This being the case, we need to recognize and evaluate the habits that drive our lives. Are they holy habits that make us more like Jesus? Or are they habits that bring eventual harm? The results of habits, for good or bad, are often so slow in building that they are almost imperceptible when looked at over a short period of time, but the end result is profound. We want to build habits that are holy and God honoring. We want to build habits that make us more like Jesus. There are so many things that we can do, but should we do them? Are they leading us and others in the right direction? Let’s do the hard work of establishing and continuing holy habits that shape us to be like Jesus and lead others to the truth and grace of God.
